The Govt. of Maharashtra has decided to take up the integrated road development programs for improvement of roads in important cities in Maharashtra. In the meeting with Municipal Commissioners headed by the Honorable Chief Minister on 18th August 2000, it was decided to take up these project through MSRDC. The Govt. of Maharashtra has already approved the projects of Nagpur, Pune, Aurangabad, Solapur City Integrated Road Development.

Kolhapur is an important city in Western Maharashtra with great historical heritage and is known for its popular Mahalakshmi temple, leather industry and developmental activities of the erstwhile eminent ruler Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj. The modern Kolhapur houses many education institutions, universities, divisional / regional offices of Government / private sector and MIDC industrial area. Nearby MIDC estates at Shiroli, Gokul-Shirgaon along with sugar manufacturing units in co-operative sector have increased the commercial value of the city.

The expenditure incurred by MSRDC is proposed to be recovered by means of toll, KMC contributions, cess on petrol & diesel. The concession period for this project is about 30 years and the project is proposed to be completed in 3 years.

The IRDP Kolhapur project was planned by MSRDC as stated above but during the meeting held by Hon. Minister P.W. (P.U.) Shri. Anil Deshmukh along with KMC authorities and local MLA’s on 21.05.2005 it was decided that the KMC will propose certain changes according to their requirements in the originally planned IRD project and accordingly the remodeled portion of IRDP Kolhapur with details will be posted shortly.
